After watching England's
performance against France midweek, even
at this early stage I'm regretting the
FA's decision to look overseas when
Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth is
sitting on their doorstep waiting for
the call. Time and time again the Pompey
boss performs admirably with limited
funds, surely it is only a matter of
time before he takes a big job, perhaps
not even with England?
Anyways, his
Portsmouth side currently lie in an
excellent seventh place in the
Premiership, and there will be big hopes
of UEFA Cup football at Fratton Park
next season. Although their away form
needs improvement, with two losses in
their last two trips, their home form is
completely the opposite.
Pompey have won
their last three on the bounce against Aston Villa, Birmingham and
Sunderland and we have to go back to
29th December for their last defeat at
home. They will now be looking for three
points against relegation battling
Wigan, which will help them kick on in
search of Europe.
Another
manager who is doing a great job at the
moment is Steve Bruce. I've not always been
a fan of the ex Utd legend, and suspected
the worst after he was 'tempted' out of
Birmingham with the lure of a big money
contract at the JJB, but fair play Bruce has
got his team going in the right direction.
Wigan's 3-1 defeat at Ewood Park against
Blackburn last week was their first defeat
in five games. We must note that although
Wigan are particularly strong at home at the
moment, their away form is shocking, with
three losses in their last four away.
Bookmakers price this one up as the Portsmouth home win 10/11, the draw is 13/5
while a Wigan away win is 4/1.

Wigan are playing well, but their wins
have come against lowly opposition in Derby
and Bolton, and when they have had to play a
top 10 team, as in Blackburn last week, they
came unstuck, losing 3-1. Pompey have only
been defeated twice at home in the
Premiership all season, and although they do
have a tendency to draw games, their recent
form at Fratton Park is a good enough
indicator to lump on.
