Well, Liverpool kissed
goodbye to any title aspirations they
may secretly have been hoping for as
they came crashing down to earth last
Sunday when they were demolished 3-0 by
a rampant Man Utd side.
It was a
disappointing anti climax to a game in
which many were expectant of a classic,
with Torres and Gerrard competing with
Ronaldo and Rooney, but after the
Mascherano sending off it really was one
way traffic.
That was Liverpool's
first defeat after winning five games on
the bounce, and they will be looking to
lift their fans by beating Everton in
the Merseyside derby today.
Everton
themselves are not having things their own
way as they have stumbled recently, with
only a draw and a defeat in their last two
Premiership encounters, which really has
dented their hopes to pip Liverpool for the
fourth qualifying Champions League spot.
Everton currently lie two points behind the
Reds, making this game much more important
than just a derby.
The bookmakers make Liverpool favourites for
the game at 4/5, while the stalemate is 13/5
while the Everton away win is 4/1.
This is a difficult game to predict as
both these teams are coming off the back of
some disappointing results, but I think
Liverpool do have the edge slightly.
Liverpool have won their last five games at
Anfield, and with Bet365 offering a
free £100
bet on this game the odds of
4/5 on a Liverpool win do look the most
likely bet.
One of the main problems that Everton
boss David Moyes has is the lack of strength
in depth in the squad, with one of their
main players, dynamic midfielder Tim Cahill
struggling for fitness. This is a major blow
as Cahill is an inspiration for them, while
for Liverpool, they will have players who
have never played in a Merseyside derby,
like Torres and Babbel, and the game will
not hold any fears for them.
The last time
Everton beat Liverpool at Anfield in the
Premiership was back in Sept 1999, and I
don't think Everton have enough in midfield
to trouble the Reds today.
They look a
little short with Carsley, Osman and
Fernandes coming up against Gerrard, Babbel
and Alonso, while Liverpool look to hold the
ace card up front with Fernando Torres.
