Being English isnt all bad....
At least the cricket team gave us something to cheer about this week. Considering we were trounced by New Zealand in the First Test to come back and win the 3-match series is a tremendous effort and the football coaching staff could learn a lot from the cut-throat selection policies which provided the backbone to the win.Harmison has been desperate over the past few years, particularly on Tour and the selectors were right to give him the boot. Although Hoggard had a poor game at Hamilton the decision to bin him was surprising and was against the views of many England fans- but it worked. Imagine if England dropped Gerrard and Rooney every time they had a bad game...
England are indebted to Ryan Sidebottom as he was the spearhead of our attack and took a whopping 24 wickets at an impressive 17.08. Without him we would've been tonked but New Zealand can take a lot of credit from the way they attacked despite having a terribly-weakened team on paper. The game was also played in a terrific spirit throughout. Australia, take note.
Despite losing stalwart skipper Stephen Fleming to retirement and Shane Bond to the IPL New Zealand can take solace from the unearthing of what looks like a rare talent- 19-yr-old Tim Southee. We saw a glimpse of him at the Twenty20 World Cup but he responded to his Test call-up with a tremendous performance. His 5/55 in his first innings was fantastic and following his tame dismissal for 5 runs with the bat he looked like a classy young bowler. Then the real party started. 77 off 40 balls in his second knock- with 9 sixes- including the 2nd fastest Test 50 of all time. It looks like the Kiwis have a star on their hands.

New Zealand come to England in 6 weeks' time for another 3-match Test Series. Can't wait.
